How a High School Diploma Helped One Man Discover a More Honest Future

Greg is a high school graduate from the Smart Schools class of 2022. He is a walking success story, having set a goal for himself and finished it. They say that success often isn’t a straight line, like we expect it to be. It was certainly true for Greg.

In high school, Greg was a self-proclaimed “class clown” and believes that he is still that way. He had a shaky childhood. There were struggles and some trauma along the way. As a result, he was never motivated to do well in school. When he was in high school, his parents got divorced and he soon dropped out.

He decided to get into the workforce. He struggled with addiction and lacked the motivation and self-esteem needed to go back to school. Going back to school became an overwhelming proposition. As a result, he didn’t return to school for quite a while.

Overcoming the Past

In his career, the hardest thing was the knowledge that his resume didn’t reflect reality. He felt haunted by the mistakes of his past. Fast forward years later, when he had married, conquered sobriety, had three kids with another on the way, he was ready to be done with the lie.

Some might say it took long enough, but it took as long it needed to take. Everything happened at the right time, when he was ready to commit.

When he encountered Smart Schools, everything about it was a perfect fit. His wife helped him get his transcripts and signed him up for the program. It was an affordable and flexible high school diploma program. He was able to learn, study and take exams at his own pace. There were proctored exams at the end of class but even those were flexible and could be scheduled at any time. It worked better for him that way.

Support Along the Way

Whenever he had a question, someone was there to help him. He was able to make up elective credits with the hours worked at his current job, speeding up the time to graduation.

Every step of the way, he had an Academic Advisor cheering him on. “I would finish a class and my Academic Advisor would send a text message saying great job, you’re almost there!”, he says. Those little expressions made the process easier.

He is thankful for his wife who was willing to take care of their home and kids, enabling him to finish school. He couldn’t be more thankful to her for her help.

Honesty Feels Good

The best thing about getting his high school diploma is that it allows him to be honest with his family and children about his high school graduation status. He now has options that he didn’t have before Smart Schools. He feels the future is bright, one way or another. “Now, I can try to reach for more goals that I always had but couldn’t go after because I didn’t have a high school diploma,” he says.

His advice for anyone who is on the fence about whether or not to enroll, is to just do it. “I had plenty of excuses,” he says. “I wish it hadn't happened but it did. You can make all the excuses in the world but in the end, it’s easier and better than you think. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner. I promise you’ll have the same regret if you wait any longer.”
